Discussion on budget begins; Antony calls PM Modi desperate, BJD says govt will fall

NEW DELHI: The discussions on the Union Budget in Lok Sabha on Wednesday saw the political opposition punch holes in the government’s budget document.
On the one hand, while former Union minister and Congress MP AK Antony drew parallels between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US president Donald Trump, referring to their working styles as exhibiting ‘perversity’ and ‘desperation’, he also alleged the government had implemented GST only for the purpose of political manipulation. Referring to the treasury benches as a government of slogans, Antony also said the ‘one nation one tax’ slogan was hollow.
TMC MP Saugata Roy also said the government’s claims of ‘ease of doing business’ had been derailed by the growing vigilantism in the country. In a barb directed at the BJP MPs, Roy said the insistence on the construction of the Ram Mandir was adversely impacting investment into India.
Pointing out that the govenment’s capital expenditure and allocations on health and agriculture sectors had reduced, and that there was a shortage of funds, the TMC MP also said the government had spent more on publicity than on actually handing out benefits to the people of India. “Government talks about Ujjwala, but what happens to the refills?” he said. In his overall comment on the Union budget, Roy said, “Mr Jaitley has missed the bus for the next election. In 2019, someone else will present the budget”.
Prophesysing on the protests by TDP MPs, BJD MP Tathagat Satpathy said just like the UPA government had been brought down after ‘Telegus’ split from them, the BJP government too would fall because its TDP allies were now protesting against the government because their demands have remained unmet. “Congress was pulled down by the curse of the Telegus. The same is now happening because their demands are not being met,” Satpathy said. On Wednesday, Shiv Sena also threw its weight behind the TDP MPs saying it was unfortunate that NDA allies were now having to resort to such means to get their demands heard.
