Mahindra Scorpio TOISA 2018 Nominees: Coach/Mentor of the Year

NEW DELHI: The third Mahindra Scorpio Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) powered by All-Out , is India’s first and largest multi discipline people’s choice sports awards. TOISA is a platform created by the Times Group to recognise and reward Indian sporting talent and achievements on a global scale and will be held soon to honour the lion hearts who have done the country proud.

Ahead of the 2018 TOISA to be held on February 26, here’s a look at the nominees for Coach/Mentor of the Year for 2017.

Mahindra Scorpio TOISA 2018 Nominees: Boxing

PULLELA GOPICHAND (National badminton coach)

Gopichand, a recipient of the Dronacharya and Arjuna awards as well as the Padma Bhushan, has single-handedly turned India into a badminton superpower through his work as a coach. His pupils include Kidambi Srikanth, currently world number 3 and the first Indian in 2017 to win four Super Series titles; PV Sindhu, currently women’s world number 3 and Olympics and world silver medalist; and Saina Nehwal, current world number 10 and Olympics bronze medalist. His disciples also include Parupalli Kashyap, B Sai Praneeth, HS Prannoy, Gurusai Dutt, N Sikki Reddy, Pranav Chopra, B Sumeeth Reddy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Rituparna Das, Sameer and Sourabh Verma and young Siril Verma.

His state-of-the-art academy in Hyderabad has trained the cream of Indian badminton players and has produced five players in the top 25 of the world. Three of his young students won medals in the Under-15 women’s and doubles’ events at the International Junior Grand Prix.

Mahindra Scorpio TOISA 2018 Nominees: Cricket

STEPHEN CONSTANTINE (Coach of men’s football team)

Oversaw India’s run to the top of the group A table in the AFC Asian Cup, qualifying for the 2019 tournament. Under Constantine, the Indian team has been unbeaten in 13 games on the trot since the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Playoff Round 1 match against Laos on June 2, 2016 – an all-time record. Constantine helped take the Indian team from 173 to 96 in the FIFA rankings.

ANIL KUMBLE (Former coach of Indian men’s cricket team)

Oversaw a 10-5-1 record from 16 international matches this year. This spanned an unbeaten run in five Test matches – victory over Bangladesh and a 2-1 win over Australia as India regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In ODIs with Kumble as coach, India had a 5-3 record this year with a series win over England and a run to the ICC Champions Trophy final. In T20Is, Kumble oversaw a 2-1 win over England.

HARENDRA SINGH (coach of Indian women’s hockey team)

Under Harendra, the women’s team remained unbeaten during the Asia Cup in Japan and regained the title for the first time in 13 years. Leading players, including captain Rani Rampal and goalkeeper Savita Punia, gave credit for India’s Asia Cup win to Harendra.

TUSHAR AROTHE (coach of Indian women’s cricket team)

Appointed head coach in April and helped guide India to the World Cup final in June. Under Arothe’s tutelage, the women’s team also won a quadrangular series in South Africa.
