Prisoner dies in hospital, kin alleges foul play

Jaipur: A 66-year-old inmate of Jaipur Central Jail died on Saturday morning. The relatives of the deceased alleged the elderly prisoner had died of injuries.
According to the police, Wahid Ahmead Qureshi, was rushed to the SMS Hospital at 3.45 am, when he complained of pain and discomfort. “At 3.58 am, he was declared dead by the doctors. The family had complained that he suffered from blood pressure related problems,” said an official of Jaipur police.
The police claimed inmate died of long illness. Shahid Qureshi, son of the deceased inmate informed TOI that his father had been prison for last 35 years and suspected foul play. “There were some injuries on his leg. Which seemed recent, I don’t know what happened but there is something suspicious and it should be investigated,” he said.
“The police did not inform us about the death till 7 am. Somebody called us and asked us to come at the post mortem ward at 9 am. I think something was done to him due to which he died,” he said.
The police, however, claimed that a judicial probe has been ordered in the case as per the procedure. “The case is being investigated by a judicial official. The post-mortem report will establish the cause of death,” the official said.
The family members protested against the jail authorities and said that there should be an independent probe to find the real cause of his death. “The entire case reeks of something suspicious. We will go to the court if required, the police said that a judicial probe has been set-up into the death,” Shahid said. Source : timesofindia
