Controversies have made me what I am: Vijender

JAIPUR: Turning Professional was a “very tough” decision for boxer Vijender Singh. More so, because of the critics who were against this move. “There were too many things that had to be sorted,” Vijender said on Wednesday. He is set to take on Ghana’s Earnest Amuzu in his 10th professional fight here on December 23. With nine wins under his belt, the Olympic bronze medallist is confident of adding one more. He will be defending both his titles, WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental Super Middleweight.

Even though Vijender is confident, he still recalls the butterflies that he felt going into his first pro fight against Sonny Whiting. “That was the toughest so far,” he said. “There were so many things to prove.” In the ring it wasn’t all that difficult as Vijender won by a TKO.

Talking about Controversies – he was at the centre of a drug-related storm in 2013 – Vijender feels it has only made him stronger. “If these controversies had not happened, I would not have been what I am today,” he said. “They taught me to look beyond the mirror and decide what is right. Akal badam khane se nahi athi, thokar khane se athi hain (Intelligence comes from wounds and not almonds).”
