Sonowal takes up Brahmaputra turbidity with PM

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured to ask external affairs ministry to raise the issue of water turbidity in Brahmaputra with the respective country to ascertain the cause.

During a meeting with Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who was also present in the meeting has informed that her ministry has already taken up the issue with China.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley and Union minister of road transport, water resources and river development Nitin Gadkari were also present.

Chief Minister’s office said the Centre took up the matter seriously and directed the ministry of water resources to take remedial steps on a war footing.

Prime Minister also asked other ministries to work in synergy and directed the Union ministry of water resources to ensure scientific tests of the Brahmaputra water to ascertain the physical and chemical composition of the turbid water of Brahmaputra.

Brahmaputra water turned turbid after its major tributary Siang which originates in Tibet because excessively murky.
