Former Jharkhand CM convicted in coal scam

NEW DELHI/RANCHI: A special CBI court held former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, ex-Coal secretary H C Gupta and others guilty of criminal conspiracy and corruption in a coal block allocation scam case on Wednesday.

Besides Koda and Gupta, special CBI judge Bharat Parashar convicted former Jharkhand chief secretary Ashok Kumar Basu and Koda’s alleged aide Vijay Joshi for being part of the criminal conspiracy to favour Vini Iron and Steel Udyog Ltd (VISUL) — also held guilty — in allocation of Rajhara North coal block in Jharkhand. The arguments on quantum of punishment will be heard on Thursday.

He became the first independent MLA in Bihar-Jharkhand to become a CM on September 14, 2006, and continued in office till August 23, 2008.

During his two years in office, Koda came close to various coal and iron ore mining companies.

“At that time there was no system of auction of mines and it was on the basis of recommendation of government that coal blocks were allocated,” parliamentary affairs minister Saryu Rai said.

Koda was charged with several cases of corruption. He has been facing trial in court of ED and court under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. He was allegedly involved in coal and mining scam pegged at Rs 4000cr. Though he contested and won the 2009 parliamentary election from Singhbhum as an independent, he was arrested by state vigilance department on November 30, 2009, in the Koda mining scam.
