Manushi Chhillar was India’s top trending personality of 2017 on Google

NEW DELHI: Miss India-World Manushi Chhilar was India’s top Trending personality on Google search in 2017, according to the internet giant’s annual Year in Search results. She was closely followed by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and cricketer Smriti Mandhana.

Three contestants from the popular reality TV show Big Boss were also among the top six personalities on the list — Priyank Sharma, Arshi Khan, Sapna Choudhary. While Sunny Leone was at number five, YouTube star Vidya Vox and actor Disha Patani are at the seventh and eighth position respectively. Two other sportswomen, Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj and wrestler Geeta Phogat, feature at number 9 and 10. In 2016, US President Donald Trump was the top Trending Personality in India, followed by badminton player PV Sindhu.

Google’s Year in Search results reveal and the top trends and searches by users in India, reflecting the biggest interests. The trending queries are the searches that had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2017, with spam and repeat queries being filtered out. The results also exclude queries with a very small search volume, which might not be indicative of a significant trend.

Bollywood films and cricket completely dominated the overall top trending queries for the year, with India’s most expensive movie Bahubali 2 topping the list, followed by Indian Premier League. Dangal, Half Girlfriend, Badrinath ki Dulhania, Munna Michael, Jagga Jasoos and Raees were some of the other most searched films.

IPL was also the top trending news moment of the year, followed by ICC Champions Trophy, CBSE exam results, UP election results and GST.

Indians were also looking for information about Aadhar-PAN linkage, GST and bitcoin during the year. The top trending ‘how to’ search was on how to link Aadhar card with PAN card, with another question on how to file GST return featuring at number 5. Queries on how to mine and buy bitcoin, and purchase Ethereum were also part of this list. The top trending ‘what is’ search was for GST, followed by bitcoin and jallikattu. Indians were also curious about BS-III vehicles, Jio phones and Prime, Cassini, fidget spinners and Ransomware.
