Let inflation data speak for itself, says Jaitley

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday rebutted Congress criticism of the government’s handling of the price situation.

Jaitley was responding to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi‘s swipe at the government on Twitter for “burdening” the common man with the rollout of GST, demonetisation and price rise. Rahul had also posted a graphic which displayed the prices of gas cylinder, onions, tomatoes and diesel.

The finance minister hit back posting a graph showing the decline in retail Inflation in the past three years. “Let the data on inflation figures speak for itself,” the FM tweeted.

The NDA government assumed power when retail inflation was near double digits and food inflation had posed a serious worry. Since May 2014 the government unveiled a series of measures, including a crackdown on hoarders and identified inflation management as a policy priority. Inflation management is seen as a success of the NDA government although lower oil prices had also helped.

Inflation as measured by the consumer price index hit a record low of 1.5% in June but since then it has risen to 3.6% but still below the Reserve Bank of India‘s target of 4%.
