Sepoy arrested for drowning 3-day-old daughter in Churu

Jaipur: A sepoy employed with 15 Jat regiment was arrested by Taranagar Police on Sunday for allegedly drowning his three-day-old daughter in a bucket of water at Ghasla Aguna village under Taranagar police station in Churu.

The couple already have a daughter, who is one-and-a-half years old.

According to the police, the man was expecting his wife to deliver a boy but when she delivered a girl for the second time, he was furious and killed the infant girl.

The accused identified as Ashok Jiyani, employed as sepoy with 15 Jat regiment, had taken leave to go home.

On Friday evening, Ashok took her newborn daughter from the bedroom and drowned her in a bucket full of water. “He said he acted in a fit of rage. He said he couldn’t raise two daughters. His first daughter is 16 months old,” Taranagar SHO Ram Chandra said. Soon after the incident, there was huge hue and cry in the house. Ashok threatened everyone to keep mum and not to inform police.

Next day on Saturday, when the villagers saw Ashok burying the infant, they informed the police.

“We have arrested him on the charge of murder. The accused is now showing signs of regret and claimed he acted in a fit of anger,” the SHO added.

The infant was born on Tuesday, police said, adding, the accused’s wife Priyanka has given an official statement on the incident.

“The infant’s mother, Priyanka, has lodged an FIR. The body was exhumed in the presence of the SDM for post-mortem yesterday,” said a senior police officer.
