“Rahul ji, who is presently busy in Gujarat assembly elections, will surely make a visit to Varanasi for civic body poll campaign only when PM Modi visits his constituency,” said former MP of Congress Rajesh Mishra, while addressing a joint press conference with former MLA Ajay Rai on Saturday. The list of other star campaigners of Congress includes the names of Raj Babar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sharmishtha Mukherjee, Pramod Tiwari, Sanjay Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and PL Punia, they said.
Mishra alleged that BJP is trying to capitalise the Padmavati row to divert people’s attention from the basic issue during elections. “BJP people like chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi and Union minister Nitin Gadkari are speaking on this issue. There is censor board that can clarify the things, but the controversy is being flared up intentionally for political gain,” he said.
Targeting BJP, he said that BJP is losing its credibility among the people, who are facing the brunt of demonetisation and GST. “PM Modi is happy with the certificates from US President Donald Trump and Moody, why he has not got any such rating from domestic agencies,” he wondered adding that his (Modi’s) magic that worked in 2014 parliamentary elections and UP assembly elections would fail in local body elections.
Rai accused BJP of covering its failure by including the leaders of rival camps in its fold. “The BJP has been at the helm of Varanasi Municipal Corporation for last 22 years, but the condition of the city is going from bad to worse. The outgoing mayor throughout his tenure did nothing except holding meetings and getting photographed,” he said.
Rai also blamed Samajwadi Party, the ally in UP assembly election, for not keeping its leaders intact. “SP failed to keep district panchayat president Aprajita Sonkar with it. Congress had strongly supported SP in saving Aprajita in no-confidence motion brought by the BJP, but she changed her loyalty and Joined Bjp camp,” he said wondering, “How SP can claim the mayoral post when it failed to keep its district panchayat president”. Most of the leaders, who joined BJP on Friday, were from SP, while only one from Congress -a 75-year-old former MLA Shashi Sharma joined BJP, added Mishra.
