Congress to discuss schedule for party president election

NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will discuss the schedule of its presidential Election in a meeting early next week, news agencies have reported.

The CWC meeting, to be held on Monday at 10.30am, will take place at incumbent president Sonia Gandhi‘s residence, PTI quoted Party sources as saying.

“Dates for election of Congress President are to be fixed on Monday. If only one nomination is filed, it will be announced on the date of withdrawal of nominations, that he is the President since there is no other nomination,” party leader Janardhan Dwivedi told ANI, when asked if vice president Rahul Gandhi will be elevated to president.

Rahul is expected to be the only candidate in the running, PTI reported quoting sources.

A few days back it had been reported that the party elections had been put off till after the Gujarat polls.

In fact, a senior leader had said that the elevation amid a tight campaign schedule in Gujarat would create an “unnecessary distraction” for party workers.
