JDA continues to demolish NIMS hostels for 2nd day

Jaipur: The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on Saturday continued its drive to Demolish illegal hostel buildings at the National Institute of Medical Sciences University (NIMS) campus.

After evacuating four hostel buildings situated in catchment area of Ramgarh Dam, the enforcement teams razed the front walls and pillars of first and second floor of these buildings. The teams are simultaneously involved in removing derbies from the site and dumping at vacant land near Achrol, nearly 2-km away from the campus.

As JDA has earlier decided to demolish remaining illegal construction using controlled detonation technique, the explosive expert from Indore also visited the site on Friday. However, the JDA officials have put proposal on hold till Jaipur Development Commissioner (JDC) Vaibhav Galeriya returns from foreign tour. This has been decided as expert is demanding very high price to demolish these buildings.

According to senior JDA official, “Expert S B Sarvate has demanded assistance of a consultant and Rs 45 lakh to demolish these buildings. The JDA has approved to provide a consultant, however, it has not decided to pay such hefty amount. The final decision will be taken once JDC is back.”

According to sources, buildings were demolished by using controlled detonation technology in 2012. Sarvate had charged Rs 7 lakh for the work. The cost have gone up significantly during five years.

“The expert has reasoned that number of pillars in these four hostels are more and usage of explosives will be more,” added an official.

Officials claimed that the university has encroached upon 8,125 square metre of land. Following the Supreme Court directions, the (JDA) issued notices to the (NIMS) to remove encroachments from government land voluntarily. The drive was initiated after NIMS failed to adhere given deadline.

The Apex Court recently dismissed petitions by the NIMS against the Rajasthan High Court order to demolish encroachments by it in the catchment area of Ramgarh Dam and directed the JDA to remove unauthorised constructions by November 30.
