Next, Siddaramaiah will celebrate ‘Ajmal Kasab Jayanti’: Anantkumar Hegde

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Skill Development Anantkumar Hegde on Friday tore into Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah for celebrating Tipu Jayanti in the state and said the day wasn’t far when the people will be asked to observe “Ajmal Kasab Jayanti”.

“Siddaramaiah celebrated Tipu Jayanti, it is a matter of time before he starts making you celebrate Kasab (Ajmal Kasab) Jayanti,” Hegde was quoted as saying by ANI.

Addressing a public meeting in Belgavi, the BJP leader slammed Siddaramaiah for sidelining the Kittur Chennamma Festival, which has immense historical and cultural significance, in favour of state-wide festivities to mark Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary on November 10.

“Siddaramaiah did not celebrate Kittur Chennamma festival but he is busy celebrating Tipu Jayanti,” he jabbed.

Hegde, a five-time member of Parliament for Uttara Kannada, has been a vocal critic of the ruling Congress party and vehemently opposed the state-sponsored celebrations of Tipu Jayanti since its introduction in 2015, disparaging the festival as a “shameful event glorifying a brutal killer”.

Last month, Hegde had categorically informed top officials of the Karnataka government to leave him out of any events in celebration of Tipu Jayanti.

Targeting the ruling Congress over the law and order situation, Hegde claimed that Bangladeshi immigrants were responsible for the rising rate of violent crimes in the state.

“Karnataka has become a safe haven for criminals, there are 9 lakh Bangladeshis in Bangalore, you’ll find immigrants in Belgaum, Bijapur, Hubli, Dharwad and even in Kittur. Check under your legs, bombs could have been planted,” he railed.

The Karnataka government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10 was termed unwarranted by many, with the BJP and RSS slamming the decision as “minority appeasement”. Some had also pointed out that the birth anniversary of Tipu falls on 20 November and that 10 November was the day he hanged 700 Melkote Iyengars.

Widespread protests and violence have marred the celebrations for the last two years. Security was tightened to ensure peaceful celebration this year, but incidents of violence were reported in some parts of the state.
