Ask PM why Rafale deal changed: Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi said PM Narendra Modi should be asked “why the Rafale Deal was changed” to benefit a businessman, renewing the attack on the government and Reliance Defence even as BJP accused him of diverting attention from UPA arms deals.

Rahul raked up the Rafale fighter jet deal as well as the business dealings of BJP chief Amit Shah’s son in a chat with reporters on Thursday.

“You ask me so many questions and I answer all of them… why don’t you question PM Modi on the Rafale deal?” he asked.

Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Congress was reminded of its own rule when it made such allegations.

“They are finding it difficult to accept that there has been no case of corruption in the three-year rule of the Modi government,” Prasad he aid. BJP has called it a ploy to “divert attention” from the AgustaWestland scandal.

In a statement, Reliance Defence Ltd dubbed Congress’s allegations as “baseless and unfounded” while French embassy officials on Wednesday, pointed to the benefits to India.

Rahul’s comments were followed by sarcastic jibes on Twitter in which he played on the name of industrialist Anil Ambani‘s defence firm. “Can you explain ‘Reliance’ on someone with nil experience in aerospace for Rafale deal,” “Self ‘Reliance’ is obviously a critical aspect of ‘Make in India’,” he said in tweets.

In another tweet, Rahul said, “Modiji, nice touch removing the suit, but what about the loot?” On Tuesday, Congress had alleged that the Modi government had renegotiated the UPA’s Rafale deal with France, resulting in massive escalation in cost. The French company has denied any government role in its arrangement with the Reliance firm.
