CBI files case against Sterling Biotech Ltd for cheating public sector banks of Rs 5,383 crore

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a case against Gujarat based Sterling Biotech Ltd for cheating public sector banks to the tune of Rs 5,383 crore.

CBI has named the company Sterling Biotech Limited and its directors Chetan Jayantilal Sandesara, Dipti Chetan Sandesara, Rajbhushan Omprakash Dixit, Nitin Jayantilal Sandesara and Vilas Dattatray Joshi, besides chartered accountant Hemant Hathi, the then Andhra Bank Director Anup Garg and unknown private and public servants.

CBI has alleged that Sterling Biotech Group has diverted the loan money to its entities abroad through a circuitous route.

The benami entities of the group were used for trading in shares of SBL as off market transactions, says CBI.

Earlier, on August 30, CBI had filed a case against Sterling Biotech and three senior Income Tax officers for alleged corruption.

In its August FIR, CBI booked Income Tax department officers upon discovering alleged entries of payments made to them in a diary recovered from IT raids at a business group’s premises in 2011. The officers named were Sunil Kumar Ojha, Principal Commissioner Income Tax Guntur, Subhash Chandra, Commissioner Income Tax, Thane and Manas Shankar Ray, Commissioner Income Tax, Ahmedabad.
