The Army on Wednesday said Chavan, who was handed over by Pakistan in January this year, had pleaded guilty to the charge of Wilfully Crossing over into PoK. “The sentence is, however, yet to be confirmed by higher authorities,” said an officer.
Chavan has been sentenced to two months and 29 days in jail, along with two years forfeiture of service, by the court martial. Once Chavan had crossed over into PoK in September last year, the Army had taken up the matter with Pakistani military authorities through the existing DGMO-level hotline.
“His presence was finally acknowledged by Pakistan on October 7, 2016. The matter was also taken up diplomatically through the Indian High Commission in Pakistan and Ministry of External Affairs before he was finally handed over to India at the Wagah border on January 21,” said an officer.
