Saina Nehwal out of Denmark Open in quarters

NEW DELHI: Ace India shuttler Saina Nehwal‘s campaign at the Denmark Open Super Series Premier ended on Friday after losing her quarter-final match in straight games to the defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

Saina was no match to the in-form fourth seed Yamaguchi tonight as she lost 10-21, 13-21 in a contest which lastet just 29 minutes. With it, Indian campaign in the women’s singles event also came to an end as the second seed PV Sindhu has already crashed out in the first round itself, losing to China’s Chen Yufei.

Yamaguchi will face Yufei for a place in the final on Saturday.

From 3-3 in the first game, Yamaguchi won consecutive points to push Saina on the backfoot and led 11-6 at the mid-game break. She wrapped the first game 21-10 in no time.

The second game was tighter in comparison as the duo exchanged points till the break, at which time Saina narrowly trailed Yamaguchi by one point (10-11). But after that the Japanese changed the tempo and raced to 20-12 in quick time. Saina could muster to save one match-point before losing the game 13-21.

Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy will play their respective men’s singles quarter-final ties later in the day.
