Those who talk about secularism actually indulge in appeasement: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

BHOPAL: Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s resolve to reconstruct Kedarnath temple complex with the state-of-the-art technology, a dream he had seen during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, drew praise from Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He described it as a great effort to bring all sects work unitedly for development of the country and not a ritual of any particular religion.

In an oblique reference to the Congress, Chouhan, who also had announced to take responsibility of rebuilding the Kedranath complex immediately after the ravaging floods in the area in 2013, remarked that those talking about secularism, were themselves involved in appeasement policy keeping vote bank politics in mind.

“Dharma (religion) is the basis of Indian culture. But those who talk about secularism actually talk about appeasement. India has given respect to all religions and sects though people have defined the truth differently and in their own ways,” said Chouhan during Govardhan Puja celebrations at his official residence, on Friday.

The chief minister also took an opportunity to highlight Prime Minister’s Kedranath visit for the much-awaited reconstruction work which Modi had talked about in 2013 and admired the latter’s initiatives.

“I really appreciate that Prime Minister is on a visit to Kedarnath. This is not only a ritual, but an effort to bring all sects together in one direction so that our country could take up the development collectively,” said Chouhan.

On Thursday, Chouhan had commented that Diwali is a tradition and bursting crackers is part of it. A day earlier, the chief minister had praised lighting 1.71 lakh lamps in Ayodhya and tweeted that people must light a lamp for the development of the state and the country. On the occasion of Govardhan Puja, Chouhan said cow is the basis of economic prosperity and Govardhan Puja is the worship of nature.

“Govardhan puja is a tradition to worship hills, trees, rivers and herbs. Our sants had envisaged to make combined efforts to save environment and Govardhan festival promotes environment conservation. We must tap our resources and not exploit them to control problems like climate change,” said the chief minsiter.

Sources in BJP said the saffron party’s recent pro-culture and pro-tradition stances indicate that the party is again going to play the Hindutva card in the forthcoming assembly polls in several states. For political opponents like the Congress, the BJP’s initiatives during festivity symbolises a step moving forward towards the same agenda, sources said.
