A senior police official said, acting on specific information, police along with Army’s 22 RR and 179 Battalion, 177 Battalion, 92 Battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Check-e-Brath area of Sopore today morning.
“During searches, hiding militants fired upon joint search party, triggering the encounter,” he said, adding that two militants were killed were later identified as Pervaiz Ahmad Wani, Hizb Divisional Commander and Naeem Ahmad Najar of Shelpora Brad, Sopore.
“Two AK rifles, three AK magazines, 90 AK rounds, One INSAS rifle, one INSAS Magazine, 13 INSAS rounds and other ammunition were recovered from the encounter site,” the police official said, adding that both the militants were “involved in anti-national and anti social activities”.
The police official claimed that Pervaiz Ahmad was involved in the serial blast on mobile towers in 2015 and in a series of civilian and police killings besides involved in various attacks on police/security forces. He was involved in killing of two police personnel in Handwara market in 2013, in attack on police post Langate in 2016, and an attack on Army in Handwara and attack on SBI Sopore.
Meanwhile militants today afternoon hurled a grenade on paramilitary Crpf Men in Qazigund area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir, resulting in injuries to three personnel.
A police official said, the militants targeted CRPF men on duty at Qazigund and lobbed a grenade towards them which exploded with a big bang.
In the explosion, three CRPF men sustained splinter injuries and were rushed to nearby hospital. Soon after the attack, security forces cordoned off entire area and launched searches to nab attackers.
