Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns from Union Cabinet

NEW DELHI: Rajiv Pratap Rudy has resigned as Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship from the Cabinet, news agency PTI has reported quoting sources close to him.

According to news agency ANI Rudy will be given organistional work.

His resignation comes amid speculations about an imminent Cabinet reshuffle to fill vacancies in the Union Cabinet.

Notable among those who have left the Union government are Manohar Parrikar and Venkaiah Naidu. While Parrikar took over as the chief minister of Goa, Venakaiah Naidu was elected the Vice-President of the country.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is holding additional charge of the Defence Ministry.

Besides Jaitley, three other union ministers are holding additional charges of different ministries.

Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is holding additional charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry portfolio, while Rural Development Minister Narendra Tomar has additional charge of the Urban Development Ministry.

Earlier in the day, the BJP named Mahendra Nath Pandey, presently Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, as the next chief of its Uttar Pradesh unit. Pandey is likely to replace Keshav Prasad Maurya, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, who is slated to fight the coming Legislative Council elections.

There are reports that a few more ministers may quit the government. These ministers would be assigned organisational work as the BJP gears up for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The last cabinet reshuffle took place in July last year in which Modi inducted 19 new faces and elevated Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar to cabinet rank. Five junior ministers were also dropped.
