Demonetisation a scam, Modi must apologise: Congress

NEW DELHI: Congress rubbished as “obfuscation” the government’s claims that demonetisation had led to an increase in Taxpayers and curbed black Money, and asked PM Narendra Modi to apologise to the nation for history’s “biggest scam”.

With the RBI reporting that 99% of banned notes had returned to the system, Congress accused Modi of lying on I-Daythat Rs 3 lakh crore of currency deposited in banks was black money. “A colossal failure which cost innocent lives and ruined the economy. Will the PM own up?” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Addressing a press conference, AICC spokesman Anand Sharma added, “We challenge the PM to release the list of black money holders and companies.”

Questioning FM Arun Jaitley‘s defence that notebandi had led to increase in the number of taxpayers, Sharma said the claim was misleading as the Economic Survey had reported a rise in taxpayers which was normal.

Sharma argued that the average income of new taxpayers was Rs 2.7 lakh, which meant they would pay tax only on Rs 20,000 above the tax exemption limit of Rs 2.5 lakh. He said it would have virtually no impact on tax collections.

“Demonetisation is the biggest scam, as the government has helped the wrong people legitimise their illegitimate money through it and has betrayed the poor people of the country with false promises,” Sharma said.
