NEW DELHI: In a great gesture of solidarity with our soldiers, girl students and sisters from Bengal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, have sent thousands of Rakhis for the soldiers. These rakhis are handmade by students. Little children, especially girls, are sending wonderful rakhis and greeting cards with sweet messages to the jawans at Sikkim and Siachen.

These greeting cards were given to and rakhis tied to the jawans and officers in Sikkim on August 5.

A large number of rakhis have been sent at the border posts to the jawans through army.

Similar rakhis have been sent to jawans posted in Siachen and Leh through a campaign under @Sisters4jawans initiated by former BJP MP Tarun Vijay, president of Vidya Veerta Abhiyan.

The Gangtok rakhi celebration was a great event led by Shashi Agarwal of Poorvanchal Kalyan Ashram, Supriya Baid, Vidya Bharati school. Teachers from Gangtok, girls from RSS inspired schools, and others who have specially come to Gangtok for tying rakhis on our brave jawans’ wrists as a gesture of sisterly support and prayers for their well being. From Uttarakhand, rakhis were sent by students of Aryan School led by Principal Mrs Dasgupta and Director Mrs Mridula Gupta.

From Tamil Nadu, where generally rakhi is not observed, thousands of students from Bharani Vidyalaya , Karur, led and guided by Principal Ram Subramanian, national coordinator of Students and Youth for Thiruvalluvar, inspired girl students to prepare rakhis and 15,000 rakhis received from them were sent to Siachen.

Air India carried these rakhis to Bagdogra and Leh as a courtesy to soldiers.

Often it is the brother who is supposed to protect the sister on Rakhi, but this time sisters have undertaken the noble task of providing Raksha Kavach- the protective Shield to their brother jawans, said Tarun Vijay, the programme initiator.
