SC to hear demand to remove the words ‘Secularism’ and ‘Socialism’ from the Preamble of the Constitution today

New Delhi : The Supreme Court will today Hear Subramanian Swamy’s plea for the removal of the words ‘secularism’ and ‘socialism’ in the Preamble of the Constitution. These two words were added to the Preamble through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in the year 1976 when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister.

The petition, filed by Subramanian Swamy, said that as per the arrangement given in the Kesavananda Bharati case, the Preamble is a part of the basic structure of the Constitution, so the government cannot change it.

The court will hear Swamy’s petition along with other petitions already filed.
