Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rebuts Congress on Rafale deal

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley accused Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi of carrying out a “false campaign” on the Rafale deal.  He said responsible leaders should keep themselves informed of the basic facts before they enter a public discourse on defence transactions. The Finance Minister clarified that basic aircraft price is 9 per cent cheaper under the NDA than it was under the UPA.

In an interview to a news agency, Arun Jaitley not only answered the allegations by placing facts before the Public, he also said the Congress Party and its President Rahul Gandhi had started a false campaign which was  compromising national security. He clarified that the Congress’ campaign is based on untruths, highlighting for one, how Rahul Gandhi himself had revised his per unit figures several times.

The Finance Minister made it clear that the UPA government had compromised on National security by delaying the deal for a decade. Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Jaitley said responsible leaders should keep themselves informed of  basic facts before a public discourse on defence transactions.

Explaining the difference between UPA and NDA, Arun Jaitley said the NDA deal was discussed in detail between 2015 and 2016 and later finalized in 2016. Factoring currency price fluctuations and escalation, he highlighted that the aircraft price had actually reduced by 9 per cent to the base price. The Finance Minister said that Congress Party cannot fool the public all the time. He also said that an inter governmental deal has no interference from any private company.

Directly attacking Rahul Gandhi, Arun Jaitley said rahul Gandhi had crossed all limits of decency by dragging the French President Emmanuel Macron into the picture. The ongress President had refused to accept that the French government had corroborated the government’s statement on secrecy in Parliament.

Overall, Arun Jaitley held Rahul Gandhi and the Congress guilty on three counts, First of delaying the deal by over a decade and comprising national security. Second, by placing untruths as facts in the public domain, and thirdly by attempting to further delay defence procurement which can seriously affect India’s defence preparedness.

He said responsible leaders should keep themselves informed of the basic facts before they enter a public discourse on defence transactions.

Meanwhile, Jailtey replied to a tweet by Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the matter. He tweeted to rubbish the demand and reminded the Congress president of a JPC probe into the Bofors Deal.
He further said that the JPC gave a report that the kickbacks were ‘winding up’ charges. The whole world rejected the findings of that JPC.  Jaitley then rejected the demand and said Why a JPC to satisfy your falsehood?
