Honor-able Battle: Six Phones that Challenge the Honor 7X

At Rs. 12,999 onwards, it might offer staggeringly good value for money (read our review), but that does not mean that the Honor 7X has no challengers. In fact, the latest device from Huawei’s sister brand enters a market segment that is choc a bloc with challengers, some old and some new. Here are six devices that have the capability of picking up the gauntlet that the Honor 7X has thrown down:

Micromax Canvas Infinity Pro – Canvassing for the budget crown!

Released a day before the Honor 7X was released, the Canvas Infinity Pro too comes with an 18:9 aspect ratio display, but with a smaller size (5.7 inches) and lower resolution (1440 x 720). What’s more, it is also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, which is not exactly a barnstormer. It does offer 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage, but again while the Honor 7X comes with dual rear cameras, the Infinity Pro has dual front ones (a 20.0-megapixel one and an 8.0-megapixel one), paired with a 16.0-megapixel one at the back. There are also concerns whether the 3000 Mah Battery will be able to deliver a good performance.

Lenovo K8 Plus – Plus a lot, minus a few bucks

Its relative bulk and slightly smaller size might make it seem a bit out of place in this crowd, but the K8 Plus brings in a metal frame, a 5.2 inch full HD display, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage and a rear dual camera combination (13 megapixels and 5 megapixels), as well as a large 4000 mAh battery at Rs 11,999. Some might frown at the MediaTek Helio P25 processor, though, and although some will like plain stock Android, the UI is not as rich in terms of features as EMUI on the 7X.

Nokia 5 – The Old Reliable

The Nokia 5 is a steady and solid rather than spectacular. It runs on pure Android, and features a 5.2 inch HD display (no, not full HD) and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The 13.0-megapixel rear camera is not the swiftest we have seen, though, even though the 3000 mAh battery easily lasts a day of decent enough use. Those seeking solidity and the assurance of an old name might find this appealing, but compared to the 7X, this looks like a blast from the past.

Xiaomi Mi A1 – One Android Love

There were many who were surprised when Xiaomi hopped on to the Android One bandwagon with the Mi A1. The marriage has not been a perfect one, with a few bugs and lags, but the Mi A1 did manage to score on the dual camera front – the two 12.0-megapixel cameras (One of which is a telephoto) take some great pictures and the hardware combination of a 5.5-inch full HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage and 3080 mAh battery, make it a well-specced device. Being an Android One device, it should get Android updates relatively speedily too (although there is no Oreo yet). Just be ready to excuse its occasional lags and bugs, and a rather ordinary 5.0-megapixel selfie snapper.

Moto G5s Plus – Hello, Honor 7X

The Moto G5s Plus comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, dual 13.0-megapixel cameras at the rear, a 3000 mAh battery with support for Turbo-charging and of course, Stock Android. The cameras are a bit sluggish in the depth enabled mode Motorola has used for its own version of Portrait mode. And the design with its large bezels just looks a little out of place when compared to the more edgy displays on modern phones.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 – Still Here, Still a Deal

The Redmi Note 4 is seen by many as one of the key drivers behind Xiaomi’s rise to the top of the Indian smartphone market, and its combination of a 5.5-inch full HD display, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and a massive 4100 mAh battery still make it a contender. That said, it is beginning to show its age in terms of design and its 13.0-megapixel camera is perhaps the weakest of this group.
