Lenovo Home Assistant and Sony LF-S50G Smart Speakers Launched

Sony LF-S50G Smart Speakers

After VR headset, smart speakers appear to be the latest trend in the technology world, with every other brand launch their take on one. Two of the noteworthy intelligent speakers that went live at the IFA Berlin 2017 is from Lenovo and Sony. The Sony LF-S50G smart Speaker looks the most promising among the duo and is powered by Google Assistant.

Sony’s entry into the smart speaker space may spell doom for the likes of Google Home and Amazon Echo. And that’s more due to the Japanese OEM’s expertise in building top notch audio equipment. The Sony LF-S50G smart speaker shows a lot of resemblance with the upcoming Apple HomePod, especially when it comes to the design.

The Sony LF-S50G smart speaker sport an ergonomic flat bottom cylindrical design that bears a mesh like appearance. It comes in two color options, Black and Gray. The presence of a tiny LED display on the front of the speaker for showing the time of the day, makes it look far premium that what it’s mediocre price tag would suggest.

I personally feel that Sony made a wise decision by not building its own personal assistant for its speaker. Instead, the company decided to pack in the Google Assistant with its LF-S50G. Google had recently announced that it has tied up with numerous hardware partners for including its assistant into future smart home speakers.

With the built-in Google Assistant, you can easily control your speaker with an “Ok Google” command. That said, you would first need to set up the Sony LF-S50G smart speakers by adding it to your Google Home network. For those wondering, the all new speakers from Sony can control your other smart home devices like lights and thermostats. The LF-S50G is capable of responding to a multitude of voice queries your throw at it. These include weather updates, traffic information, upcoming flights and much more.

Sony claims that its table top smart speaker is powerful enough to fill up an average size room or even your kitchen. It features a single full-range driver that fires through a two stage diffuser, thereby resulting in a 360-degree surround sound. Furthermore, the driver is backed by a dedicated bottom firing subwoofer. The LF-S50G comes with an IPX3 rating for water resistance. However, it’s not something you should go swimming with. Besides, the speakers come with built-in Chromecast, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.

The Sony LF-S50G smart speakers will set you back at $200 (Rs 12,800 approx.). It is expected to go on sale in October.

Lenovo, on the other hand, launched an Alexa enabled speaker. The main drawback of this speaker is the fact that it’s only compatible with Lenovo’s family focusing Tab 4 tablets. Dubbed the Lenovo Home Assistant, the speaker needs to be docked to the side of the tablet using a wired connection. So it’s more of an accessory of the Lenovo Tab 4 series rather than a standalone device. The Lenovo Home Assistant is priced at $70 (Rs 4,500 approx.)
