Gmail for Android now Gets Money Transfer Feature

Google has now added the Money transfer features to its Gmail Android app. Not many of us are aware that the Gmail on web supported money transfer for its users with Google Wallet and now this functionality is extended to the Android app. With this update, one can request and send money on Gmail for Android.

Sending money is similar to attaching a media file, all one needs to do is select the attachment logo on the compose screen and then select the ‘’Send Money’ option this will open up Google Wallet with a field wherein you can add the specifics including the amount to be transferred and the corresponding memo. After adding the money a card like receipt will be displayed in the email and the recipient will see the same with a ‘Claim Money’ option. Once they click on the claim money the amount will be transferred to their Google Wallet.

The caveat, however, is that both the users should be having a Google Wallet. Google claims that as of now the service is completely free for both the parties and has also baked in options that will allow you to directly transfer the money to a bank account. The feature has been currently introduced in the U.S along with the version 7.2.26 Gmail for Android and it needs to be toggled on manually.

PayPal and other similar services charge handsomely for their services and the Gmail money transfer might actually shape up as a viable alternative. Also, the very fact that it’s integrated with Gmail is bound to make the transfer process less cumbersome. Google has been working towards consolidating new features on their apps so that users don’t need to look beyond the Google ecosystem for their needs. It’s for this reason that Google has also been partnering with Uber and other cab hailing services on the Google Maps. We hope that once Google introduced international transfers the withdrawal fees and the currency conversion fee will be competitive.
