ZTE Teases its Gigabit Phone Ahead of MWC

It seems like ZTE has something interesting lineup for their MWC. The company has already revealed some details about its upcoming flagship called the ZTE Gigabit Phone. The Chinese company says that the Gigabit phone will be the middle ground since 5G technology is not expected to be available for at least the next 2-3 years. The Gigabit phone is capable of handling 4G LTE connections up to 1Gibabit per second and with this the company bets on faster access to cloud storage, VR streaming, and movie streaming.

However, the announcement is more of a teaser and it’s only in the MWC unveiling that ZTE will reveal all the details about the phone. On the contrary, the Snapdragon 835 that was unveiled earlier this year is capable of supporting maximum speeds of up to 1Gbps thanks to the X16 modem. Last year Qualcomm along with Netgear, Ericsson, and Telstra had announced a mobile hotspot that supports gigabit LTE. Gigabit LTE is referred to wireless technology that supports theoretical speeds of up to 1Gbps. Also, we have a Gigabit Netgear WiFi router that is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 LTE modem along with a WTR5975 RF transceiver. The Snapdragon X16 is based on the 14nm FinFET process.

Apart from the Gigabit phone, ZTE will be showcasing the Axon 7 which is expected to support Google’s Daydream View headset. The rumor mills are also speculating an Android Wear smartwatch with LTE connectivity called ZTE Quartz. Speaking about the 5G, the first sampling for the Snapdragon X50 5G modem will start in the second half of 2017. While the 5G technology is still distant it would be interesting to see how the industry will wrap one’s head around the Gigabit LTE and whether or not they will follow suit after ZTE.
