Australia’s most powerful dual-cab utes

Dual-cab utes have come quite a far from their humble beginnings as the simplest of work vehicles.

It’s nowhere more apparent than in the brand new Ford Ranger, which will provide a huge new touchscreen for information and entertainment and a brand new selection of driver assistance and a fresh American-inspired design when it debuts in Australia midway through 2022.

The brand new Ranger is also equipped with the latest turbo-diesel V6 engines derived from those that were fitted to the Ford range within the USA.

What do you think of the latest Ranger featuring more powerful engines, compare to its most formidable dual-cab ute rivals in terms of outputs?

The list is sorted according to the power output first. A list that is sorted by torque can be found further below.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (313kW)

In the past, American pickup trucks such as the Silverado were considered to be forbidden fruits for Australia. They’re now aiming for the same clients like Ford and The Ranger Wildtrak, or Toyota with the HiLux Rogue.

What is it that the Silverado offers that its competitors aren’t able to match is a V8 engine.

with 313kW power The 6.2-Litre naturally-aspirated engine of the Silverado is the most powerful available in a dual-cab ute available in Australia.

Ford Ranger Raptor (292kW)

Goodbye, Bi-Turbo diesel engine. You’ll be missed.

The engine is fine that’s in the present Ranger Raptor, however, that 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo engine found in 2023’s model is far more dangerous.

It’s part of the Bronco Raptor as well as it’s a part of the Explorer ST, and pumps out 292 kW of power. Ford says that its 100km/h acceleration beats hot hatches however it’s not limited to any terrain. It sounds like fun.

Ram 1500 (291kW)

Ram 1500 is just 1kW less than that of the Ranger Raptor based on its stated output, however its mild hybrid system of 48V can boost up to 12 kW when you place your right foot when you move.

Its 5.7-litre naturally-aspirated V8 that is in the more recent DT 1500 is also shared with the old, cheaper DS but doesn’t come with the same mild hybrid backing of 48V.

Jeep Gladiator (209kW)

Gladiator isn’t equipped with diesel power in Australia. Instead, it has naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre gasoline V6 that generates 209kW.

The majority of the utes featured on this list are based on low-down pull. However, the engine of the Gladiator has to be worked slightly harder to get it moving. There’s no diesel noise here but it’s a bit quiet.

Volkswagen Amarok (190kW 200kW with boost)

It’s a shame that the Volkswagen Amarok is due for replacement . The next generation model will be constructed in conjunction with that of the Ford Ranger – but even today, it’s among the most impressive dual-cab utes for available in Australia.

The power output of 190kW from the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine is more powerful than the rest of its diesel competitors, and the torque peak isn’t too far away from being at the very top of the heap too.

There are two models: TDI550, and TDI500 come with a significant 160kW, while the TDI420 and TDI400 are both equipped with 132 kW.

Ford Ranger (184kW)

The latest 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that is featured in the new Ranger is one of the most powerful engines available (or may soon be likely to) purchase in Australia.

The car isn’t quite capable of what’s available in the Amarok However, it’s not as bad as the Amarok.

Alongside along with the 3.0-litre V6, the Ranger will also come with two 2.0-Litre Turbodiesel models. One-turbo versions produce 405Nm and 125kW, while bi-turbo versions boost the power output to 153kW as well as 500Nm.

LDV T60 Max (160kW)

An update recently made an T60’s LDV T60 to the T60 Max equipped with twin turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine producing an extremely powerful 160-kW power.

It’s a lot more powerful than the 110kW power previously offered within the T60.

Toyota HiLux (150kW)

The most popular car in Australia The Toyota HiLux is a powerful 150 kW of power from its 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine with four cylinders.

Two additional engines are available with the HiLux. The one is the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel that produces 400Nm and 110kW, while the second is the 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol that produces 245Nm and 122kW.

This petrol engine will figure in this list too and beat it’s GWM Ute by 2 kW.

Nissan Navara, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max (140kW)

The fact that both the Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max have the same power outputs should not be a surprise.

They’re almost identical twins with the identical 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine underneath, producing 140 kW of power.

The two models are now also available with the 1.9-litre engine that has 350Nm and 110kW.

Its Navara has an 2.3-litre twin-turbo engine producing 140kW power. It’s also available with one-turbo versions of the engine that produces the power of 110kW, and 403Nm.

SsangYong Musso, Mitsubishi Triton

Both of these budget-friendly Utes produce 133kW with their turbo-diesel engine.

The engine inside the Triton is one that is 2.4-litre turbo-diesel. In contrast, the Musso comes with the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The Triton is also available with an naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre petrol engine producing 194Nm and 94kW.

GWM Ute (120kW)

The brand new GWMUte is a massive improvement over the unwieldy Steed however, it’s not quite on par with the top brands in terms of performance.

With 120kW of power thanks to the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine The Ute ranks on the bottom of the list.

What do you think about torque?

For a lot of owners of utes it’s not all about power. If you’re hauling a huge weight then torque is the number worth taking a look at.

The table below illustrates how much torque is produced by the Utes in this list, as well as when the rev range is in which maximum torque is available.
