So, you’re probably wondering which GOAT called Finau up during the weather delay.
No, it wasn’t Jack, and it wasn’t Tiger. Actually, we’re talking about a different sport entirely. It was a football player, not golfer, that came calling after the third round was paused due to weather.
When Tony Finau walked into the clubhouse to wait out the rain delay, he was met by an unexpected call on his cellphone, a FaceTime from Mr. Tom Brady, reigning Super Bowl champion and arguably the greatest football player of all time.

Probably not the type of call you’re expecting in the middle of a round of golf, especially from someone so prolific as Brady. It seems Finau has some friends in high places.
“That was a pleasant surprise,” Finau said. “He said, ‘Great playing,’ and he was following. He was surprised we stopped. He said in the NFL when it rains you don’t stop. I let him know, ‘Yeah, maybe we’re not as tough as you guys,’ but he said, ‘No, that’s not the case.’ We had a good laugh about that.”
When you have the GOAT calling you up to tell you you’re doing well, that’s gotta boost your confidence a little. As of right now, Finau is tied for 9th place, and the podium seems just out of reasonable reach, but you never know. Brady did pull off a miraculous comeback down 28-3 at Super Bowl LI in 2017, so anything is possible. Maybe Finau can take a page out of his good ol’ friends book and shoot up the leaderboard during the final round.
Finau didn’t share anything else regarding the content of the FaceTime, so it’s only reasonable to assume that Brady also used some time to recruit the 6’4” Finau to join the Bucs. It seems plausible that Brady simply wanted to add another deep threat to the already stacked roster, and Finau fits the bill. If he can catch anywhere near as well as he can hit a golf ball, we’re looking at Rob Gronkowski 2.0.
