Rocket Mortgage Classic | Course Preview, Field, & What to Watch for

Michigan will welcome the PGA Tour this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. The Donald Ross design will play longer than the first 3 stops since the return from break. At just over 7,300 yards, the Detroit Golf Club plays at Par 72 and will allow the bigger hitters to finally pull the head covers off.

This is only the second year of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, as it replaced the Quicken Loans tournament on the schedule. Last year’s winner, Nate Lashley, will be in the field again this week. Although the field isn’t as strong as the first 3 weeks, he will be accompanied by stars like Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, and Webb Simpson.

Course Layout

The Detroit Golf Club is a 1916 Donald Ross design, and features 36 holes on the property. They have made changes over the last 100 years, but their goal has been to keep the feeling of tradition and comfort. During his press conference on Tuesday, Bryson DeChambeau talked about the course layout and how he believes it benefits his game.

“I think there’s a lot of bunkers that are around like 290, so hopefully I’ll be able to clear those and take those out of play. So, sorry, Mr. Ross—but it is what it is.”

We will get a sense for how much Bryson uses driver once he tees off on Thursday.

RBC Heritage champ Webb Simpson returns to action this week. Webb skipped the Travelers due to concerns over COVID-19, wanting to make sure he was keeping not only himself, but the rest of the players safe. He has not tested positive for the virus.

Rickie Fowler is in the field this week, which comes at no surprise as Rocket Mortgage is one of his biggest sponsors. He wasn’t in the field in Connecticut, but Rickie has missed the cut in both of his starts so far this season. The lack of good play comes at a bit of a surprise due to the form he showed during the Taylormade Charity event. He will look to find his first weekend since returning from break.

Bryson DeChambeau, as I mentioned before, is looking to take advantage of his length this week. At River Highlands Bryson was able to use driver a little bit, but that will change this week in Detroit. He hasn’t finished outside the Top 10 since the season resumed, and I expect Bryson to be back at the top of the leaderboard again this week.

Viktor Hovland has been playing great golf since the re-start. He’s made all 3 starts so far, finishing T23, T21, T11. His game is trending in the right direction, and came in at T13 during the 2019 playing of the Rocket Mortgage.

Patrick Reed has had an up and down return to action, as he missed the cut at the RBC Heritage. He also posted a T7 at Colonial, and a T24 last week in Connecticut. His short game is second to none, and can make birdies in handfuls. I expect him to make a run this week come Sunday.

Players to Watch

Doc Redman is maybe a player you haven’t heard of, but the stars seem to be aligning for him this week. He has finished T58, T21, T11 since returning, and finished runner-up at this venue last year.

Tyrrell Hatton wasn’t in the field last week, but almost won the week before at the RBC Heritage. He led a few times on Sunday, but was unable to keep up with red-hot Webb Simpson. He is near the top on Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, and can really roll the rock. The equation works at any golf course.

My Pick

Form and history. Those are my two keys in picking the winner for the week. Because of this, I’m taking Doc Redman. 2nd here last year, and has improved his finish every week so far.
