GOLFICITY BETS: The 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic Gambling Guide

These are exciting times for golf bettors with the launch of GolfBet, the hook-up between the PGA TOUR and the Action Network.

Every week the site is packed with interesting bet types and markets that enable us to take our knowledge of an event and, all being well, cash in new and exciting categories!

So let’s take a look at our Gambling Guide for the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Tournament Preview

After three weeks of elite, almost major-quality fields, there is a meat-and-potatoes, back to basics feel about the Rocket Mortgage Classic this time out.

There is still plenty of quality on show, but the fact that the sportsbooks have Bryson DeChambeau in as a single-digit favorite tells us that there is a relative lack of class at the top end of the betting market.

That’s a bit harsh on Webb Simpson, who has won twice in his last five starts, major champion Patrick Reed and Arnold Palmer Invitational victor Tyrrell Hatton, among others, but you sense that the door is ajar for somebody outside of the elite to pick up a PGA TOUR win this week.

That’s what Nate Lashley did a year ago. Nothing more than a ‘no hoper’ with the bookies at 500/1, Lashley landed his maiden Tour title by six shots at a soggy Detroit GC.

Could we see an equally-surprising winner this time around?

Rocket Mortgage Classic Course Preview

We saw Detroit GC in the heart of Michigan for the first time in 2019, and that impression was – arguably – false.

The local area had been besieged by heavy rain in the build-up, and so the Bentgrass/Poa Annua greens were playing incredibly soft – no wonder Lashley got home in a remarkable -25!

We’d be surprised if that sort of score was recorded this week, although a winning mark in the late teens may be required with the wind speeds set to be manageable.

What could be interesting is that the narrow fairways are tree-lined and populated by typically thick rough, and with no spectators on the real estate this should stay upright and not trampled down. Could finding the short stuff be key this week?

Some of the greens at Detroit GC are incredibly undulating, and so approach play to find the right parts of the surfaces is of imperative importance too.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Outright Winner

Finding the outright winner this week could be a process of elimination.

Do you want to risk Bryson DeChambeau at single digits, knowing his iron play was way below-par last week?

Do you want to bet Webb Simpson, who has been worried about COVID-19 in his family?

Do you want to take a chance on Patrick Reed, whose short game is eluding him right now?

Do you fancy Tyrrell Hatton, who is on record as saying he much refers Bermuda greens?

In the pursuit of betting value, Viktor Hovland could be the smart play at 22/1.

He ranked first for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green at the Travelers Championship to back up top-25 finishes at the Charles Schwab Challenge and RBC Heritage – that is certainly the form of a winner in the making.

The flaw in the Norwegian’s DNA is his short game, but hopefully he won’t miss too many greens this week – if the putter heats up, who knows?

Rocket Mortgage Classic Top 5 Finish Pick

There’s no doubt, in our opinion, that Detroit GC will become a happy hunting ground for Hideki Matsuyama in years to come.

He performs admirably at other Donald Ross designed tracks, and T13 on debut here a year ago offers a hint that this layout may also suit his eye.

Matsuyama missed the cut in his return to action at the RBC Heritage, but his second round of 70 was pleasing enough and he will be looking forward to getting back to business here. If his driver behaves, a top-five finish could be the minimum of his ambitions.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Top 10 Finish Pick

When you look back at golf events you only tend to remember the winner, and so the 2020 Travelers Championship will forever be remembered as Dustin Johnson’s return to the champions table.

But Kevin Na was only three shots behind DJ in what was something of an under-the-radar effort, and that came on the back of a performance in which he ranked second for Greens in Regulation.

A fine putter, Na also gained strokes off-the-tee at TPC River Highlands, and so he brings the full package to Michigan this week.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Top 20 Finish Pick

At the Travelers Championship, Brian Stuard banked a top-20 finish for his backers at mouth-watering odds.

That’s a tournament that suits his short and accurate game to a tee, and while Detroit GC is a different kind of test his ability to find fairways and greens in regulation still translates to success.

Born and raised in Michigan, Stuard finished T5 here last year despite being hopelessly out of form at the time. Being on home soil is clearly a hugely motivating factor for the 37-year-old.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Match-up to Watch

Despite a missed cut last week, we’re still taking J.T. Poston’s reliable ball-striking to thrive over the maddening Bubba Watson in this week’s match-up pick.

For all his creativity off the tee, Bubba was in wretched form with his irons at TPC River Highlands – a course he has won three times at before remember, as well as losing -1.65 strokes on the greens.

Poston finished inside the top-10 at Harbour Town and Colonial, and a player that ranks 31st on Tour for Birdie Average has to be respected in a head-to-head contest.

Who to Fade this Week

Any golfer at single digits in the betting market comes under scrutiny as an ‘easy’ fade, and while Bryson DeChambeau has impressed with his muscular driving of late he seems to have lost the knack of hitting greens.

Some observers have actually suggested he has lost his distance control from within 150 yards to the pin, and if that is true Bryson is going to find it difficult to convert top-10s into wins.

If he sorts that issue out he’ll be a huge contender for the majors, but until then only masochists will take the 8/1 available.
