Summer is ending and schools are starting to get back in session. Early in the year I was derailed due to bad weather, constant rain and even some spring time snow showers. Lucky for me July had little rain and I didn’t have a single tee time canceled (only pushed back a little). I set some aggressive goals for myself in July that all revolved around getting out and playing golf. Here is a recap of the July / Month 7 of Duffs to Darts goals.
- Play two 18-hole rounds
- Play two 9-hole rounds
- Log my #golficityvirtualopen round and finish in the top net 50
- Break 90 on both 18-hole rounds.
Let’s start off with the positives. I played at least 9-holes of golf every week in July! For me this is something that isn’t common for me. I live an hour from my office so spending two hours a day in the car commuting takes weekday rounds out of the equation for me. I have two small kids with activities on the weekend so finding time to sneak away for 2-5 hours to play golf puts a ton of stress on my wife to get everything done on her own. I logged multiple 9-Hole Rounds at 6 am. Goal two was knocked out by the middle of the month and this included my personal best 9-hole score.

I played 18 holes on July 5th and I logged my #GVO on August 4th but I’m counting that for July. Goal one and half of goal three can also get marked as completed. Now for the negative… I shot terrible in my two 18-hole rounds. They were both played at the same course and I got beat up bad both times. Shot just over a 100 in both rounds. The whole purpose of this project is to be honest with myself and share my journey. I’m not proud of this score at all.
I am too far into this project to have the same results on 18-holes as I did prior to committing to this challenge. The most frustrating part of this is that my 9-hole rounds had good results. I shot +9 with 15 putts, +5 with 16 putt’s and +9 with 24 putts. I had a bad day on the greens with that last +9 but I hit 67% of the greens in regulation that day. Things were trending in a good direction prior to that last round.

I have been saying for awhile on my weekly check in that I feel like I’m close. I feel like my work is coming around and the results are about to show up in a big way. With over 6 balls lost and a dreadful 11% GIR on my last round I must try to remain positive. August is going to be a tough month to log rounds on the course. My kids are going back to school and its my wife’s birthday on one of the weekends. Because time is going to hard to come by, the goals for August are going to be practice related.
- 30 minutes of putting practice 5 times a week.
- Driving range short game practice session. (chipping it close and getting up and down).
- Play 9-holes.
- Play 18-holes.
- Less than 5 lost balls between the two rounds (big problem for me).
- Shoot 85 or lower on the 18-hole round.
The last goal is aggressive I know. “You just said you shot over 100 twice last month” is probably your thought. It may be blissful arrogance, but I believe that if I play my 18-hole rounds like I play my 9 hole rounds this score is more than possible. I will be planning my full round for the end of the month in hopes that my practice month pays off. I’m still confident that I can shoot scores relative to a ten handicap by the end of October but the thoughts of Duffs to Don’ts are starting to creep in. Until next month’s check-in, Keep Grinding!
