PGA TOUR, Vijay Singh Settle Lawsuit Over Deer Antler Spray

One of the darkest clouds over the Pga Tour has finally been lifted after Vijay Singh and the Tour came to a settlement on the lawsuit that Singh brought forth over five years ago.

The court system in the United States is notorious for working slowly and methodically through its cases and that was no exception for the high profile case between Singh and the PGA TOUR that seems like it has been going on for ages. But so many years later, there has finally been an agreement between the Tour, which seems to have moved past this issue, and Singh, who has become almost irrelevant on the pro circuit.

Originally sparked by Singh admitting to using deer antler spray in an interview with Sports Illustrated in 2013, the PGA TOUR took Singh’s interview as an admission, which it treats as a positive test. The result was Singh being suspended for three months.

Two months into the suspension, the PGA TOUR lifted the punishment because the substance that was illegal in the spray, IGF-1 was removed from the banned substance list.

Singh had originally filed the lawsuit once his suspension was handed down but never withdrew it after his suspension was lifted. That resulted in the five and a half year saga in the court system where Singh argued that he was unfairly labeled as trying to intentionally gain an advantage over other competitors on the PGA TOUR.

The conclusion of this long process seems to be good for both sides, however.

The PGA TOUR issued a statement that said “The PGA TOUR and Vijay Singh are pleased to announce that we have resolved our prior dispute,” the statement said. “The settlement reflects our mutual commitment to look to the future as we put this matter behind us.”

The statement also recognized Singh as one of the hardest working golfers in the game and conceded that they do not believe he was looking for an unfair advantage.

It’s amazing that this suit lasted this long and that a resolution couldn’t come sooner but it seems to have worked out for both sides. Now everyone in the situation can move on and get back to golf.
