Tony Romo Could Play in PGA TOUR Event in 2018

There have been rumors that celebrities will play in professional golf events for years and some have even gotten into an event, such as Stephen Curry who played on the Web.com Tour this year. Now, another professional is looking to tee up in a PGA TOUR event.

It’s no secret that former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS broadcaster Tony Romo is a big fan of golf. He has played in several pro-ams and has consistently tried to qualify for the U.S. Open on multiple occasions. Now that he is retired, however, there have been persisting rumors that he could take a more serious look at golfing professionally. And his broadcast partner is adding fuel to the fire.

Romo is in the booth with Jim Nantz on football Sundays now that he’s out of the NFL. Nantz is also one of CBS’ top golf broadcasters since the major golf tournament don’t coincide with the NFL schedule. And at an event where Nantz was introducing a new golf clothing line that he is starting with Vineyard Vines, Nantz claimed that Romo will be playing on the PGA TOUR this year, as well as contributing to some golf coverage for CBS.

And Nantz didn’t sound like someone just spreading rumors, giving some specifics as to when Romo would play. “He’s going to play in a Tour event,” Nantz told Golf.com while introducing his apparel at a merchandise show. “He’s going to get an exemption in the next — let’s just say two months. So he’s going to put it out there on the line.”

Going by that timeline and believing that Romo would most likely get an exemption for a tournament where he’s comfortable, Texas perhaps, most believe that Romo will play in the Houston Open or the AT&T Byron Nelson. The Dean & DeLuca Invitational could also be an option but the tournament director has shot down that possibility in the past.

Regardless of if and when Romo plays in a professional tournament, expectations shouldn’t be too low. While he’s far from a pro, Romo does sport a 0.3 handicap and is capable of competing in any event. Hopefully, the rumors are true and we would be excited to see what Tony could do in a pro event.
