Olympic Club Set to Host Ryder Cup, PGA Championship

For many of the major golf events, the courses that they are played on are decided upon several years in advance. And one course just struck the jackpot, booking two major events that won’t be played for another decade.

The Olympic Club is one of the most prestigious courses in the United States and has hosted its fair share of big golf events. Most notably, the Olympic Club has been in the rotation to host the U.S. Open, dating back to 1955. Most recently, the course was home to the 2012 U.S. Open that saw Webb Simpson capture his first major championship. But with a new deal in place, the Olympic Club looks to be moving to a new major.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Olympic Club will be announced as the home of the 2028 PGA Championship as well as the host site for the 2032 Ryder Cup. By agreeing to terms to host the PGA Championship, it looks as if the Olympic Club will be forfeiting its rights to stay in the U.S. Open loop. There had been reports that the USGA offered the 2027 U.S. Open to the course but contract talks had stalled.

Landing the Ryder Cup may be the more significant of the agreements that are expected to be made official next Wednesday. Being that the event only takes place every two years, and in the U.S. once every four years, there are several courses that are vying to host the popular competition. But by landing the Ryder Cup for 2032, it will mark the first time the event has been played on the Pacific Ocean since the 1950s.

While the Olympic Club had hoped to be the first course in San Francisco to host the PGA Championship, they will have to settle for second place, as the 2020 PGA Championship will be held at Harding Park, which is just outside of the city by the bay. This is big news for the state of California, however, as they will host a total of eight majors or team match play events over the next 15 years, spread across Pebble Beach, Harding Park, and Olympic.

While it will be a different look to see a new major played at the Olympic Club, the course is still in a prime spot to showcase its beauty. And it will be especially unique to see Europe’s finest play against the U.S. on the opposite coast come 2032.
