How Does 6.5 Grendel Compare to Other Ammunition?

Tags: grendel

Only very few in the world of ammunition and cartridges are unfamiliar with the name 6.5 Grendel. It is an upgraded form of 6.5 PPC. Arne Brennan, Bill Alexander, and Janne Pohjoispää made the design of this highly precise and low-recoil ammunition, particularly made for AR-15 style rifles for hunting deer precisely within a particular range. It was released by Alexander Arms.

Here are some benefits of 6.5 Grendel:

  • It is a low-cost cartridge.
  • It has a high performance.
  • It has high longevity
  • It is the standard cartridge for AR-15 rifles.
  • Due to its longer-range, it is considered a big name in the field of hunting.

If you want to buy cartridges and don’t know which one is better for you then take a look at the comparisons which we have organized for you.

6.5 Grendel vs 0.224 Valkyrie

0.224 Valkyrie is a product of Federal Premium Ammunition which uses a smaller bullet as compared to the 6.5 Grendel. 6.5 Grendel uses bullets that have .264” diameter whereas Valkyrie has a diameter of 0.224”. Grendel is the better option for you if you want to hunt animals, plus, many states have banned .22 caliber ammunition which makes Valkyrie an inferior option for hunting as compared to Grendel.  Though Valkyrie is a good option for ranges more than 1000 yards because Valkyrie has lesser bullet drop with lower wind-drift but Grendel’s magazine designs are still better, they are cost-friendly and reliable as compared to the Valkyries.

6.5 Grendel VS .308 Winchester

6.5 Grendel is light in weight and has less recoil as compared to .308 Winchester. The lesser the recoil the better is the shooting. The shooter will have to do less effort and shooting will be more accurate. Though .308 has a higher velocity, aero dynamicity of 6.5 Grendel is far better than .308 Winchester. Moreover, Grendel has long/thin bullets but Winchester has a thick and short bullet. So, speaking according to the use of AR 15, Grendel is a better choice than .308. Since both of these are very famous and have little difference, the comparison between them is quite a hot topic and you may find many blog posts and articles that discuss comparison of the 308 against the 6.5 Grendel extensively to clear the difference between these two cartridges at a larger scale.

6.5 Grendel vs 6.5 Creedmoor

Creedmoor uses long bullets with a 95-160 grain bullets range whereas Grendel uses bullets in 130 grains-range. Creedmoor gives an edge of better bullet selection. At close range the ballistics of 6.5 Grendel are close to those of 6.5 Creedmoor however the difference is larger at longer range with 6.5 Creedmoor having a much heavier impact but 6.5 Grendel has enough impact for hunting in small to medium range. Though the diameter of the bullet is the same for both but 6.5 Creedmoor has more recoiling. And as you know that larger recoiling can reduce the accuracy and causes more fatigue so, Grendel is the better option.

Final thoughts

6.5 Grendel has evolved as it has become more reliable and cost-friendly. All cartridges have some pros and cons. The same is in the case of 6.5 Grendel. Even if other cartridges seem better, if we compare them with Grendel at a larger scale, its performance is still optimal.
