Lacing For Runners: 3 Techniques To Ensure A Safe And Pleasant Experience

The last thing any runner wants to deal with while on a route is to stop, bend down and re-tie their shoelaces. It may be a small action but for a runner who may well be already in the zone, it disrupts the tempo and speed that has been built up. It’s frustrating and can you imagine doing it a few times along the way? You will probably end up a very unhappy runner at the end.

So here are a few ways to tie your shoelaces before you head off for your run. And trust me, these are guaranteed to keep your laces tucked in and your feet comfortable throughout.

Lydiard Lacing

This way of Lacing up is also known as “parallel lacing” or “straight bar lacing”, best tried if the top of your shoes feel tight or bind.

You start with your lace going straight across on the outside and going in through the bottom eyelet of your sports shoe. Then the left lace end runs straight up on the inside, and goes straight across on the outside. Both Lace Ends should run straight up inside, each skipping an eyelet. Continue with both Lace Ends Straight across on the outside and in through the adjacent eyelets and alternate until lacing is completed.

Gap lacing

Also known as a variation of crisscross lacing, this way of tying your shoelaces is made to accommodate high arches and wider feet.

The way to do this is to start straight across on the inside and out through the bottom eyelets of your sports shoe. Use the crisscross lacing method from the bottom up until just below the area that needs more room at the top. Create the gap by running the lace ends straight up the sides to the next higher set of eyelets. Continue with the crisscross lacing above and finish with a normal bow.

Loop lacing lock

Fondly known as the “runner’s tie” as the top of your shoe will resemble a tie being knotted. This method is best used to minimise heel slippage.

Start by lacing up all the way to the second top eyelet as per normal using your preferred method. Then, run lace ends straight up on the outside and in through the top eyelet. Cross the lace ends, and pass them over the opposing vertical section. Using this method to tie your shoelaces will ensure that when you pull in the shoelaces to tie, you will also be increasing your foot security.
