Why I Stopped Playing With Tenergy – And What I’m Using Instead!

I started using Tenergy 05 back in 2009 – pretty soon after it was first released. I was instantly hooked! The speed, the spin, the high arc. It was all perfect.

Later, as a poor student, I tried switching to a cheaper Stiga rubber. I hated it. I decided I would rather play with my old Tenergy than the new Stiga rubbers and switched back. I assumed I would be a Tenergy addict for the rest of my life (or at least until Butterfly came up with something better to replace it).

Fast forward to 2017 and I haven’t touched a sheet over Tenergy in over a year. I’ve quit the habit! How did that happen? Well, it all started with a podcast interview of Paul Drinkhall back in 2015.

Paul had just recently signed a sponsorship deal with Tibhar and had switched from using Butterfly Tenergy 05 rubbers to Tibhar Evolution MX-P. He said he thought they were just as good as Tenergy and recommended I give them a go myself.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical. After all, Paul was sponsored by Tibhar so, of course he was going to say Tibhar rubbers were the best. They practically pay him to say that! But I decided to give them a try anyway.

From Tenergy to MX-P

I stuck a couple of sheets of MX-P onto my Timo Boll Spirit blade and after just a few balls I fell in love with them. It was blatantly apparent that Tibhar had created Evolution MX-P to be their version of Tenergy 05. The good news was, they had done an awesome job of it!

The sponge was medium-hard (exactly like Tenergy), the speed and spin were spot on, and the arc was high (very slightly lower than Tenergy 05 but still brilliant).

I’ve been using Tibhar Evolution MX-P on both sides of my bat ever since – and I couldn’t be happier. It’s the Tenergy 05 alternative I’ve spent the last seven years looking for!

And back to Paul Drinkhall…

He switched from Tenergy 05 to Evolution MX-P in the summer of 2015. Since then, he’s played some of the best table tennis of his life – reaching a career high of #32 in the world in September 2016. Clearly, moving away from Tenergy hasn’t held him back at all!

Still not convinced…

Tibhar Evolution MX-P was the #1 best-selling table tennis rubber at Tabletennis11.com in 2015 and 2016! Everybody loves it.
