Watching your Children grow and explore the world around them is one of the true joys of parenting, even when you are just the parental figure for your younger siblings.
17 year old South Jordan student Max Jorgensen has become the de facto parent for his Youngest Siblings. As Max’s parents have moved their focus from their children to their midlife crisis and impending divorce, Max has taken it upon himself to raise his younger siblings as his own.
“Like a lot of families in Utah, Lance and I met during our first semester at Utah Valley University,” explained Patricia Jorgensen, Max’s mother. “After two bowling alley dates, I knew he was the one I wanted to spend the next 20 years with before we inevitably hate every second we spend together and pit our children against each other in a messy and vindictive divorce.”
After several months of parental neglect, Max prepared lunch one day for his youngest siblings. One day became one week, and one week became the last two years. These days, Max balances the stresses of high school, homework, sports, and girls with the stresses of rearing the next generation of Jorgensens as a 17 year old single parent.
“For a second there, I was worried about having to actually take care of all seven children,” said Lance Jorgensen. “After our oldest son left for his LDS mission, Patty brought up the option of drowning the smaller ones in the bathtub. Unfortunately, when you have six children at home, you incidentally create your own witnesses. We are so thankful that Max’s empathy compelled him to take this mess off our hands. I honestly don’t know where he gets that from.”
“It’s such a relief that Max stepped up to raise his siblings,” said Patricia. “Now I have the time to reach my goals in life, find what drives me, and explore my sexuality. I became a mother so early in my life that I wasn’t able to truly find myself. Now with Max’s help, I finally get to experience young adulthood and what I missed out on in high school and college because of my children.”
Max was not able to find time for a formal interview, but did share his enthusiasm for repeating this cycle of neglect with his own children.
