The 25 Most Viewed Comedians on YouTube

Here is the infographic for the most Viewed Comedians on Youtube. I took 1360 comedians from this wiki page – List of comedians and compared their aggregate stats using YouTube API and some perl scripting.

How I Collected the Statistics

First of all, the infographic is just an estimation. It is not accurate for 2 main reasons. The methodology used is to Search for a comedian’s video by his name. However, a comedian can be in a video that the search didn’t find. Secondly, the YouTube API has its limitations and doesn’t return all video search results.

My main source of data is the YouTube Data API. I used it to search videos for each comedian, ordered it by View Count and summed it up. The data was collected on January 9, 2016.

I took the list of 1360 comedians from this wiki page. By the way, if a comedian you know isn’t in the top 25 but you think he/she is supposed to be, it’s most likely because that person isn’t in this list.

I wrote a perl script (Nerds assemble!) to get all the video search results, stats for each comedian in the list using the YouTube Data API.

Here is the search query I ran for each comedian:

https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/search?part=snippet&order=viewCount&type=video&safeSearch=none&maxResults=50&q={comedian name}

The comedian name is the exact name from the wiki page listed above with some clean up:

  • removed quotes (single and double)
  • added surrounding double quotes (so that search results are more accurate. For example, Justin Long will not be as accurate as “Justin Long”)

I ran this search query by paginating through the nextPageToken. Although the search API only returns a maximum of 500 overall results. Due to this limitation, the total view count is just an approximation. The results are ordered by view count in descending order and safe search is turned off.

I collected all the results from the API call into a csv file and ran R statistics software on it to get the total views for each comedian.

Here is the R command:

dat = read.csv("youtube-stats.csv", header = FALSE)
aggdata

I had to remove some comedians from the top list because they had the same name with another substantially more famous person:

  • Bob Marley
  • Ant (who knew ants were funny?)
  • Will Smith (there can only be one...)
  • Ashley Tisdale (not really a comedian)
