Recently I had this great idea to build my own jet pack. I’d done some research and determined that Baking Soda and white vinegar made for a good explosion – a ‘vinegar and baking soda bottle bomb’ was how it was described on google. That was exactly what I needed.
I sourced an old wine bottle from the recycling. No shortage of those at our place. I don’t want to point any fingers but the person responsible knows who she is. Anyway, I strapped the bottle to an old backpack with a couple of belts, put in some baking soda and filled it with vinegar. It fizzed but it wasn’t quite the reaction I was looking for. I wasn’t airborne and the wine bottle was still in one piece.
I gave up on the jetpack idea, helped myself to a whole new bottle of vinegar, and threw a mother load of baking soda straight in. Now there was some action. So much action that the bottle of vinegar exploded all over the driveway. Little bits of glass went flying everywhere. Mum’s reaction was almost as explosive. She was fuming but too embarrassed to yell at me outside in front of the neighbours. Instead she gave me a broom and a bag and I wasn’t allowed back in the house until every splinter of glass had been cleaned up. I really didn’t care. It was by far the coolest home made explosive I’ve made to date.
We don’t have baking soda in our house anymore.
