The Best Canned Wines You Can Drink Right Now

Alloy/Union/Infinite Monkey Theorem/Uproxx

Canned Wine has come a long way since its invention (probably?) by Frank Reynolds on an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia way back in 2009. In the episode, Frank (played by the always hilarious Danny Devito), ever the innovator, decided to put red wine in soda cans so that nobody would know that he’s walking around all day with an open container.

It might not have anything to do with Frank, but the idea definitely caught on with wineries. Over the past few years, scores of wineries have begun selling their wine in cans (some only sell their wine in cans). It makes perfect sense as the world of craft beer has fully embraced cans and stocking a cooler with wine and beer cans is a lot easier than trying to stuff a box of Franzia on top of everything. The best part? Many of these canned wines are really good (plus the artwork is pretty great too).

We’ve included some of our favorites below:

Porch Pounder — Chardonnay

It might have a cheeky name, but Porch Pounder takes its wine seriously. This 100% chardonnay is equal parts fresh fruit and bright acidity. It’s well suited for an evening sitting on a porch or patio.

Tangent Wines — Sauvignon Blanc

This San Luis Obispo-based winery is more known for its bottled wine. But, Tangent decided to join the canned wine craze by canning its rosé and sauvignon Blanc. The latter is crisp and full of flavors like grapefruit and green apple. It’s perfect for a spring hike.

Backpack Wine — Snappy White Wine

Like Porch Pounder, Backpack Wines’ name pretty much sets you up for what to expect out of the wine. This refreshing, Washing State Riesling is well-balanced with hints of pear and lemon zest and a subtle acidity. It’s a great addition to a picnic menu.

Alloy Wine Works — Everyday Rosé

Alloy Wineworks’ cans look like the coolest craft beer. Except instead of beer, they are full of the trendiest wine on the market. They version is crisp and full of flavors like strawberry, grapefruit, and melon. It’s right at home at the beach on a warm spring day.

Sofia — Mini Blanc De Blanc

Francis Ford Coppola is well-known as the director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now (among many more), but did you know he also owns an award-winning winery? In an homage to his also famous daughter, the winery makes Sofia Mini Blanc De Blanc, a mixture of 70 percent Pinot Blanc, 15 percent Riesling, and 15 percent muscat.

Underwood — Pinot Noir

Oregon’s Union Wine Company was the first to make canned wines mainstream and the company has gotten pretty good at it. Its Pinot Noir (like all of its canned wines) are designed to be easy to travel with. This particular wine carries flavors like mulling spices, black cherry, and chocolate and is a wonderful wine to toast a slightly chilly spring night.

The Infinite Monkey Theorem — Dry Hopped Sauvignon Blanc

Like many of the popular canned wine brands, The Infinite Monkey Theorem uses whimsy to draw attention to its product. But, the wine itself is anything but funny. One of its best offering is its Dry Hopped Sauvignon Blanc. This wine will appeal to both beer and wine drinkers as it is a combination of Citra hops and crisp, subtly acidic Sauvignon Blanc.

The Great Oregon Wine Company — Pinot Noir

It seems like Oregon is the place to go if you want a great canned wine. Obviously, that’s where The Great Oregon Wine Company is located and their canned Pinot Noir is a standout. This wine is the perfect, handheld wine to bridge the gap between spring and summer. It’s full of rich oaky, cinnamon and a wide variety of fruits flavors.
