Before Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th, Star Wars fans will have Star Wars: Battlefront 2, a crucial chapter that bridges the gaps between Episodes 6 and 7 to dig into. Rather than follow the Rebels as they rebuild their way of life across the galaxy, relieved of the pressures of the Empire, we’ll be following a different perspective, one of Iden Versio, an Imperial Special Forces officer who has lived her life as a proud member of the empire. Her father is an admiral in the Empire’s fleet, and both bore witness to the destruction of the second Death Star and the Emperor.

We’ve seen quite a few bits and pieces, but D23’s Behind the Story featurette is the deepest dive into what to expect from the story mode yet. We know that Versio and her team will likely come into contact with the green lightsaber-wielding Luke Skywalker (well before he went into exile), and they are now an elite unit of killers that are dealing with the fact that for the first time, in her lifetime at least, they are the underdogs.

Disney has done wonders after the initially freaky dumping of the Star Wars extended universe canon. It was jarring when the stories and adventures in the years following Episode 6 were thrown out, but now we know exactly what happened in the time between the battle of Endor and Episode 7, mostly through the Battlefront games and their accompanying novels. The Battle of Jakku was detailed in Aftermath: Empire’s End and now Inferno Squad’s backstory is fleshed out in the aptly titled Battlefront 2: Inferno Squad.

We all know Battlefront 2‘s main hook will be the era-spanning multiplayer suite in which you can pit characters from Episode 1 all the way to Episode 7 (Darth Maul vs. Kylo Ren!), but this story will be a crucial chapter in the Star Wars canon that shouldn’t be overlooked. We’ll see how the Empire went from galaxy superpower to splintering off into the Snoke and Kylo Ren-led First Order.

Disney, EA, and Lucasfilm know how important every chapter of the Star Wars universe is at this point, so there’s no doubt that this will be an impactful and important chapter that shouldn’t be missed. When was the last time we had a Star Wars game this important to the overall story?
