Summer Sporting Events Worth Traveling For (Plus What To Do While You’re In Town)

Uproxx

Summer is made for travel. It’s also a banner season for outdoor sports. And though three of the “Big Four” American sports are in their off seasons, there are plenty of premier sporting events around the globe worth flying to see.

We decided to pick a few of our favorite summer sporting events, then asked Uproxx Travel Editor, Steve Bramucci, for some tips to help you hit the ground running.

UEFA Champions League Final: Real Madrid vs. Juventus, Cardiff—June 3

Getty Image

The great thing about the Champions League — other than it’s ridiculously dramatic theme music — is that the final game is handled like a Super Bowl that’s played all around the world. This year’s final takes place in Wales, at the National Stadium of Wales. Watching Ronaldo and Real Madrid try to win a second straight Champions League final (their third in four years) is one hell of an excuse to visit Cardiff.

Steve’s Tip: Party at Cellar Door, Cardiff

Cellar Door

This just might be the only place on the planet where you can rage all night inside a bank vault without being arrested. That automatically seems like a win.

French Open Gentleman’s Final, Roland Garros—June 11

Getty Image

Go to France to watch Rafael Nadal dominate on clay. Nadal has won nine French Opens at Roland Garros, and he’s got a great chance to make it 10 this year after a convincing win on the same surface at the Madrid Open earlier this month. We’re nearing the end of of the most recent golden age of tennis, so enjoy Nadal’s brilliance on the red stuff while you can. There’s no one like him on that surface.

Steve’s Tip: Eat at Auberge des Pyrenees Cevennes

The famous cassoulet at this Paris bistro is the ultimate French comfort food dream. Auberge des Pyrenees Cevennes is affordable and wonderfully reviewed — the sort of Paris meal you’ll never forget.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualifying: USA vs. Mexico at Azteca, Mexico City, June 11

Getty Image

Turns out June 11 is a big day for our travel guide. While traveling to Russia for the World Cup in 2018 might not sound like a great idea right now, watching the US Men’s National Team try to get there could be equally thrilling. As the soccer rivalry between the US and Mexico continues to build, it’s an exciting time to experience a national team game at Mexico City’s famous stadium.

With Bruce Arena back in charge of US Soccer, the national team has turned around what was a disaster of a qualifying run, and a win against Mexico on the road would be a huge boon for their World Cup hopes.

Steve’s Tip: See Street Art while Eating Street Tacos in Mexico City

Mexico City has some of the best murals and graffiti on the planet. Walk the streets on a cultural exploration and keep your eyes peeled for Tacos al Pastor. These tacos are native to the capital (by way of the Middle East) and should be celebrated at every turn.

Orioles vs. Red Sox, Fenway Park—June 23

Getty Image

This might seem like an odd pick given the recent terribleness of Red Sox fans at Fenway when the O’s and Adam Jones are in town, but stay with me here. Sox fans will be on their best behavior and perhaps at their most vulnerable because David Ortiz’s No. 34 will be retired by the team that night. Considering we’ve already missed Derek Jeter’s No. 2 going into Monument Park for the Yankees, this is undoubtedly the most notable number retirement of the baseball season. If not this game, which will be a tough ticket to get, see a game at Fenway before you die. Old parks with new amenities are what make summer baseball worth watching in person.

Steve’s Tip: Go to Boston Common

No summer experience beats a classic park day, and this is one hell of a park. Wander around, scare some ducks, talk in your best townie accent — it’s a pretty solid way to while away the hours!

Tour de France, July 1-23

Getty Image

There’s a big window to hit up a Tour de France stage if you’re near Paris this July, and there’s added excitement about this year’s race for a number of reasons. Defending champion Chris Froome will go for his fourth career title in the event, which features 10 new sites and stage cities. So even if it’s not your first Tour, there’s a chance to experience something new. The course is also altered slightly, and will run through the five mountain ranges of France for the first time in more than two decades.

Grab a guide book, brush up on your jersey colors and go have some fun watching other people pedal very hard.

Steve’s Tip: Go to a Cheese Co-Op

Forget cycling through the mountains, eat cheese in them. Those high elevations make for some pretty incredible dairy cows, you’d be a food to skip small dairies like those found in the Berria de Onetik co-op.

2017 MLB All-Star Game, Miami—July 11

Getty Image

Miami in July? What a terrible idea. I’m sure there will be nothing to do other than watch an exhibition baseball game. But in all seriousness, the All-Star Game’s interesting bits will almost certainly be outside of the game itself. It doesn’t even determine home field advantage in the World Series anymore, though that was an entirely silly concept in the first place. Marlins Park is a disaster financially speaking, but it’s not a bad place to watch a game. Or, you know, Home Run Derby if you so choose.

Let’s be honest, you’re traveling for the nightlife, the shopping, and the beach. Not the baseball.

Steve’s Tip: Go to A Pool Party

There’s a trend these days to avoid cliche things — but some things are cliche for a reason. Go to the High Bar or one of Miami’s many other rooftop infinity pools and drink in the middle of the day with all the beautiful people. It’s exactly as much fun as it sounds, which is a lot.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Game: Cardinals vs. Cowboys—August 3

Getty Image

The Hall of Fame Game is a tradition in Canton, but it didn’t happen last year. Poor field conditions cancelled the game, but things will be very different this time around. The game, for one, will be played on a Thursday night before the induction ceremony. It will also be a massively updated stadium the two pro teams play in to start the NFL preseason. Formerly known as Fawcett Stadium, Saints owner Tom Benson donated millions to get the place named after him following a hefty renovation process that wraps up earlier in the summer.

If you’re a Cardinals or Cowboys fan, it’s a good time to visit the Hall of Fame anyway: Former Cardinal Kurt Warner and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones are inducted later that weekend. Renovations or not, this is still NFL Football played at a high school football stadium. It’s pretty unique.

Steve’s Tip: Go to the Pro Football HOF

Listen, unless you’re a big William McKinley fan, you’re going to Canton for the HOF. If you’re already there for the game, might as well take a stroll around.

NASCAR Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, Bristol Motor Speedway—August 19

Getty Image

I went to Bristol for a College Football game last year and it was awesome. The track isn’t hosting anything close to the highest-attended college football game in history, but watching cars race around that half mile track at night is something worth driving to the border of Tennessee and Virginia. The atmosphere around the track is exactly the tailgating vibe people rave about in big college football towns or NFL cities famous for their pregame festivities like Buffalo. But once you get inside you’ll likely see one of Dale Earnhardt Jr’s last races. It’s also a short track with 30 degree banks in the turns so you know there will be some wreckin’ to boot.

Steve’s Tip: Eat at Burger Bar

Burger Bar

If you like NASCAR, you probably know your way around some good old fashioned Americana. The Burger Bar is a perfect pit stop (*giant elbow in the ribs, followed by 24-hours of shame*), for people who like the roadside diner vibe. Make sure to have a chocolate malted and ask about old Han Williams, who supposedly had his last meal at the counter.

NCAA Sydney College Cup: Rice vs. Stanford, August 27

Getty Image

Last year’s inaugural Sydney College Cup featured Cal and Hawaii and was a huge leap forward for college football on the continent. This year’s event features Rice taking on Stanford to kick off the 2017 college football season. It’s a long way to go for college football, but Sydney is a city worth visiting at least fifty or so times in your life. Might as well make the trip to see last year’s Rose Bowl winners play the Owls, right?

Steve’s Tip: Meat Pies & Bondi

Unsplash

Meat pie and Bondi rhyme, though you wouldn’t know that until you get there and hear people say both words. They’re also both Sydney icons that ought to be experienced (often) — one, a hot pile of flesh, toasted to a crisp; and the other a pie with meat inside. Real talk: Bondi is awesome. It’s loaded with surfers and beautiful people and adventure loving Aussies of all stripes. There’s no better place to indulge in Australia’s most iconic street food!

Florida State vs. Alabama, Atlanta—September 2

Getty Image

How late can we get into September and still call it “summer?” Either way, We’re counting this. It’s one of the biggest season-openers ever, with an Alabama team that’s always loaded facing a Florida State team that won a thrilling Orange Bowl against Michigan last season. Early-season college football is always full of unknowns, but the names here are huge and they’re likely the two best teams in the country. Also, if things go well you’ll get a chance to take in Atlanta’s shiny new football stadium, which dwarfs the Georgia Dome.

Steve’s Tip: Visit the MLK House

Look, this hasn’t been very educational world tour, and that’s fine. But you should never end your first trip to the ATL without visiting the childhood home of one of our nations most important icons. Stand in awe of greatness.
