Best Friends Build Their Own Personal Tiny Town To Retire Together

Some friendships last a lifetime. For those lucky enough to remain fast friends with someone for decades, that bond is carefully treasured. For a group of four couples, there’s plenty of friendship to go around. So much so, in fact, that they want to make sure they stay as good buddies throughout their life. To achieve this goal, they built their own personal tiny town to retire there together.

Though they had their primary desire figured out – retiring together in a quaint, comfortable setting – they still needed to figure out other logistics. Helping this band of eight was architect Matt Garcia helped their dreams become reality in a very thoughtful manner. It’s one thing to want a cozy corner of a location for yourself and your buddies. But it’s another to figure out all you’ll need to live there comfortably.

The four couples had some specifics in mind when they decided to build a tiny town for themselves. They wanted their space to be eco-friendly, which Garcia took into account. Each couple put forth $40,000 for a cabin situated right near their other best friends. Together, the homes making up this town sit near the Llano River outside Austin, Texas.

Though not yet retired, these eight friends plan on moving here when that big event comes up. Even when living so nearby, their future homes still offer comfortable spaces for guests to stay over. Each house has a spacious, bright guest room with a sweeping view of the outside greenery. Breathing room is not in short supply, as bunk beds let plenty of people rest there. There’s even room for a picnic table and cozy armchairs. The rest of each cabin offers the same: warm wood paneling, abundant natural lighting, and plenty of space to spread out.

With clever designing, location adds to the enjoyment

This group’s corner of Texas is reportedly particularly prone to draughts. To compensate, slanted roofs guide water into large barrels designed to irrigate the land. In total, this system can collect 500,000 gallons of rainwater. Extreme temperatures are something of the norm in these parts. Garcia designed the cabins to take care of themselves in that regard too. Reflective windows and insulated windows help keep temperatures moderate through summer and winter alike.

To maximize their small space, the couples will share a communal kitchen, 1500-square-foot total, with large stainless steel appliances. This tiny town is still under construction, but what exists so far looks very cozy! The plywood interior, cute size, and closeness to nature make this look like a Hobbit hole for humans.
