Truvada Causing Bone Loss & Kidney Failure

As consumers, we rely on medications when we get sick. We put our trust in these drugs to treat us instead of making out conditions even worse than before. While we understand that all kinds of medications have some side effects associated with them, we would still like to be informed about them on the medicine package label to make a decision.

Truvada, a medicine supposed to treat HIV and AIDS, has been inviting several lawsuits from people all over the country because of its severe side effects. The medicine has been linked to Bone loss and Kidney Failure. Many people suffering from Truvada injuries have filed a lawsuit to seek compensation for their damages.

What is Truvada?

Truvada is an antiviral prescription medication used to treat and prevent HIV and AIDS. It is a product of the pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, Inc. The US FDA approved this drug in 2012 to prevent the chances of becoming infected in those at a high risk of infection. The drug can also treat patients who have tested positive for HIV-1 and make it difficult to pass it to others.

Does Truvada cause bone loss?

Despite the company’s success in selling this medicine, it has been linked with bone loss density and kidney failure.

After taking the HIV drug for a few weeks, a person may see a decrease in their bone density and acquire bone-related problems. Bone loss can lead to osteoporosis which can cause the bones to become brittle. Brittle and weak bones can increase the risks of:

  • Broken bones
  • Bone fractures
  • Osteopenia

Signs of bone problems may include joint pain, back pain, and hip pain. A study in 2011 revealed that the patients who were taking Truvada were at a greater risk of bone fractures than people who were not taking it.

Does Truvada cause kidney failure?

Truvada was designed to be consumed at high dosages for a long time. Our kidneys are supposed to expel this drug from the system. Therefore, Truvada also puts pressure on the kidneys. Too much strain on the kidneys can cause kidney damage and lead to failure of the organ.

The drug has been found to increase the risk of chronic kidney failure and acute renal failure. A study conducted in the year 2012 showed that an element named tenofovir, found in Truvada, is associated with kidney failure. Among 10,000 patients with HIV who were consuming this drug, their risks of chronic kidney failure went up by 33% each year.

Can I file a Truvada lawsuit?

Anyone infected with AIDS or HIV who has consumed Truvada and suffered injuries can file a lawsuit. If your family member has suffered death due to it, you can file a compensation claim.
