An exam represents a test at which the Student has to demonstrate his individual qualifications and skills. If the student – intentionally or unintentionally – acts in such a way as to improve his exam conditions compared to what was intended, he is Cheating to obtain an incorrect assessment. If the student is helping someone else to obtain an undue advantage, this also is considered cheating.
Attempts at cheating at tests or exams will be treated in accordance with the rules regarding tests or exam cheating. The rules regarding exam cheating are all applicable regardless of the type of exam.
What are the consequences of exam cheating?
If you are cheating or if you help someone else to cheat – contribute to cheating at an exam in other words – this may have some serious consequences for you. What are the possible sanctions? Possible sanctions range from a simple warning to permanent expulsion from the college or from the university. The rector of the university may impose the following sanctions:
- Cancellation of an exam.
- Issue of a warning.
- Temporary or permanent expulsion from that university.
What are the sanctions in case you are a student or on a professional degree programme, or an academy profession degree? In this case, the impositions of sanctions will take place in accordance with the rules in the Examination Order.
What about the rights during the case consideration process?
Teaching and exam activities – A pending case. If you are a party in a pending case regarding suspected exam cheating, you have to know that you have the same rights as the students which means that you are allowed to participate in teaching and exam activities at the university while your case is being considered.
In case of a sanction you have to know that if you have been reported for suspected exam cheating and a sanction is imposed, your participation in the exam may be declared invalid. Despite your case is still pending, during the case consideration period you can register and participate in any reexamination. The cancellation of an exam is the least serious sanction in connection with cheating.
Registration for reexamination. If you want to be registered for reexamination in the relevant course but you are party to a pending case regarding suspected exam cheating, you have to contact the administration to obtain your degree programme.
When the sanction has been carried out. If you were caught cheating and a sanction has been imposed against you, you can continue all your study related activities with the other students. No special measures will be taken, you will not be under enhanced supervision during your future exams. This cases regarding exam cheating are all confidential.
What are the procedures for handling exam cheating?
Any suspicion of exam cheating has to be reported to Educational Law. Educational Law handles such cases in behalf of the dean. You as a student will be informed that your exam will not be assessed while this case is being investigated. Until a decision is made, any planned oral defence of an exam will be postponed.
When Educational Law Receives the report on suspected exam cheating, all the details will be assessed before they decide if they will reject the report or they will continue the consideration of this case. As a student you may any time during this consideration request a meeting, to have the opportunity to comment on the case.
