Rustic DIY Mail Organizer

I’m still so in love with the Rustic Picture Frames that I made for our living room. They are one of my favorite DIYs ever! So when I saw this metal basket on wood from Magnolia Homes (which is $64 – yikes!) and is a similar style to my picture frames, I knew that they would be an awesomely simply DIY Mail Organizer that I could make.

This is another quick project that took an hour from start to finish. It’s functional and also adds that lovely warm farmhouse feel to my kitchen! Another successful project :-)

What You’ll Need:

  • A metal mail basket (or any other basket that you like). I got mine at Michael’s for $6
  • 6  1 x 3 boards cut to the length of your choice.
  • Stain (I used this) and rags
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Screwdriver (we love this bad boy)
  • Sawtooth Hanger
  • Screws

Directions for DIY Mail Organizer:

To make the wood base, follow the directions as per the Picture Frame Tutorial.

Stain the wood and sand the edges to soften the look. Feel free to distress or add paint for extra rustic charm!

This time I used thin plywood for the braces so that the piece would sit almost flush against the wall.

Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back BEFORE you screw the basket to the front!

You’ll want your screws to be no longer than .75inches long or otherwise they will go right through the wood as you screw them into the basket, as the wood itself is only three-quarters of an inch thick.

Then just hang on the wall and organize your mail!

Getting off track for a second. Does anyone else have a not-even-connected landline in their home? Isn’t it strange that so many of us only use cellphones now!?

This Mail Organizer could also be used as letters-from-school station for your kids. Make it longer and attach baskets for each kiddo. Then when they come home from school all those flyers and letters can be placed in the basket! The teacher in me loves that idea :-)
