How Does Ductless Heating Work?

Wondering how Ductless mini split systems work? You’ve probably heard of these innovative systems that are an alternative to furnaces and other home heating systems. They have many benefits, including better energy efficiency, air quality and more.

Ductless heating systems are most popular for two of their features: they’re ductless and they allow you to heat different parts of your home to different temperatures. If you’re considering a ductless mini split system, you may wonder how they manage to give your home these unique benefits. Here’s how ductless mini split systems work.

How Does the Ductless Mini Split System Generate Heat?

A ductless mini split system doesn’t burn fuel to generate heat as a fireplace or furnace does. Instead, it takes advantage of the heat outside and pulls it into your home. A ductless mini split is like the opposite of an air conditioner. It uses a compressed gas to draw heat inside your home instead of pushing it outside as an air conditioner does.

How does it work on a cold winter day then? Although we feel cold when the temperature drops, there’s still heat left in the air for the system to draw into your home. Only at absolute zero, or – 459 degrees Fahrenheit, is there no more heat left in the air. So, ductless mini split systems will continue to work during even the coldest winters.

In fact, as ductless mini split systems work like an air conditioner in reverse, they can cool your home in the summer too. They just need to be designed to switch between heating and cooling modes.

Why Don’t Ductless Systems Need Ducts?

That explains how mini split systems generate heat, but why don’t they need ducts to distribute this heat throughout the home? A fireplace or furnace will generate heat as they burn fuel, and then pump it though the metal vents (ducts) in your home to spread it out. But ductless systems aren’t connected to your ducts.

Instead, ductless mini split systems are installed right onto your wall. They spread the heat with a fan system. You’ll have more than one unit installed in the home, to heat up different areas. This has a few advantages, including:

  • Air quality: Without ducts and forced air systems, ductless mini splits don’t spread allergens and dust throughout your home. The result is better air quality.
  • More room: There’s no need to install ducts in your walls when you’re using a mini split system. This can give you more room for other features or save on the costs of building a home addition.
  • Different temperatures: Each unit you have can be set to a different temperature. This means you can correct cold and hot spots in your home or cater to family member’s different temperature needs.
  • Energy efficiency: With a ductless mini split system you can only heat the room you’re in. That means you can save on energy costs.
